Did You Know?

Bro. Obediah Hodder

Did you know Crow Head native, Bro. Obediah Hodder, initiated into Twillingate Lodge in May, 1907, was the founder of the Sleepy Cove copper mine? His father and brother discovered deposits of high grade copper at Crow Head in 1902. Obediah bought their shares in 1906, and ran the mine until 1917. Though Bro. Hodder invested in the latest American-made mining equipment, the copper deposit turned out to be small in size, and only a few loads were ever shipped out. After the failure of his mining venture, Bro. Hodder opened a cooperage at Twillingate, but eventually returned to Pennsylvania, where he had been living for some years prior to founding the mine.
