Bro. Nathaniel Petten (Patten)

Did you know Bro. Nathaniel Petten (Patten) was Twillingate’s longest-serving pre-Confederation police officer? Born around 1845, Bro. Petten, then an acting sergeant, was posted to Twillingate in 1885. In 1902 he attained the rank of first-class head constable. Five years later Bro. Petten bought a home which still stands near Twillingate’ post office; it is known today as the Loveridge House. He remained at Twillingate for some thirty years, departing upon reaching the Newfoundland Constabulary’s compulsory retirement age. Bro. Petten died at his home in St. John’s in 1918.
